Kate Turner – Dietitian & Personal Trainer

Meet Kate! She lives across the country in sunny California with her new husband and is rocking her new business, Live Well with Kate.  I met Kate a few years ago in California during Nutritious Life’s Masterclass.  I was immediately drawn to her and her sweet and welcoming demeanor.  One of my memories of that weekend was her telling me about how she spent a summer in Italy attending culinary school.  Since visiting Italy is a dream of mine and since I love to cook, I was in awe of that experience.  Thanks to Kate this is now on my bucket list.  One amazing thing about our Nutritious Life Studio community is that you get some really amazing ladies to cheer you on.  I feel Kate has been one of those for me.  And I hope that she can say the same about me.  Thanks, Kate, for giving us a glimpse of your wellness journey.

What is your occupation?

Registered Dietitian and Personal Trainer. I work as the Nutrition Specialist for Nordic Naturals and own my own virtual coaching business LIVE WELL with Kate.

How did you choose this career?

In high school I loved science (yes, I was the chemistry nerd), but had no idea what I wanted to do with it. I also knew, and it may be my pisces nature, that I wanted to help people. Then during my first meeting with my college guidance counselor she asked me, “when you go to pick up a magazine what types of magazines are you drawn to the most?” My answer: health and wellness like Shape or Women’s Health. Then she asked, “and what section do you flip to first?” My answer: nutrition section most of the time. Her next question: “Would you want to do that as a career?” That’s how I discovered what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I didn’t even know it was an option until that point and it perfectly combined my love for science and my desire to help people. From that point on I was dedicated to nutrition plus all things health and wellness and applying that in realistic ways to help people reach their goals.

What do you love about what you do?

I love that I get to help people have small successes each day based off what they’re learning, which lead to lifelong successes and habits.

When you first started living a healthy lifestyle, did you have a mentor or did you find more success doing it on your own?

I can’t say I’ve had one particular mentor, but rather many along the way that I have benefited from in different ways. The knowledge I gained from these mentors provide me with the tools to create the best program for each of my clients.

What pushes you out of your comfort zone?

Anything I’ve never done before or only done a few times. But also every time before a new client’s initial session I get butterflies, wanting to do the best job for them and hoping they’ll trust me! It goes great every time.

What kind of workout do you do, how many days per week do you workout, and for how long?

I typically do a mix of strength training, HIIT, pilates and walking. On average I would say I workout 5 times per week, but there are also some weeks where I may only get in 2-3 workouts. Regardless, I try to walk everyday to get in consistent movement and it’s a great mental break!

What does a typical day of eating look like for you?

Breakfast: 2 pasture-raised eggs, sauteed or fresh greens, and avocado with hot sauce, kitehill cheese spread and Trader Joe’s everything but the bagel seasoning. Or these healthy Breakfast Tacos or a smoothie! Each morning I also have a matcha latte + 16 oz of water.

Lunch: Salad with a protein (tofu, rotisserie chicken, tuna fish), scoop of hummus, fresh veggies, avocado, and one of Primal Kitchen’s dressings (I love their lemon turmeric dressing!)

Dinner: Usually a protein (I love my easy baked salmon!) with some sauteed garlicky greens, sauteed frozen veggie medley and sweet potato rounds. We usually try to have a delicious sauce with it as well one of my favorites is my Easy Peasy Parsley Sauce for a punch of flavor.

Snacks: I love veggies and hummus or even just grabbing a scoop of nut butter and sprinkling some ceylon cinnamon on it. If it’s before a workout I always make sure to have a piece of fruit with my snack for an extra energy boost.

What inspires you to live a healthy and active life?

My clients and how it makes me feel.

How do you stay motivated on a daily basis?

I remind myself (sometimes many times per day) how much better I will feel if I do positive things for my body and my mind.

How do you handle unhealthy cravings?

I usually will give into them, but only have a little. I find it’s better to fulfill a craving than to ignore it, but focus on having a taste, feeling satisfied and moving on.

What would you say is the key to balancing it all?

Know that you have to nurture both your physical and mental health. Cut yourself some slack and focus on doing things that make you feel good, while taking breaks when you need it.

What is your favorite workout apparel?

I would have to say Lululemon since I live in the align pants, but I am also really loving Gap’s workout apparel.

If you could only pick one exercise or movement to do everyday that would be amazing for your body, what would it be?

Walking for both your physical and mental health. And try to do it outdoors!

What advice would you give to people to be their healthiest and best self?

Same answer as #11 Know that you have to nurture both your physical and mental health. Cut yourself some slack and focus on doing things that make you feel good, while taking breaks when you need it.
