Amy Rains – Nutritionist, Food Blogger, and Cookbook Author

Golly, this wonderful lady inspires me so much. She is a jack of all trades in the wellness industry…nutritionist, food blogger, cookbook creator, recipe developer, and food photographer. What can she not do? I love Amy! She has such a sweet heart and is open to share and support those in her field. She is a rockstar in the industry and has created and shared so many DELICIOUS recipes through her well known food blog, Wholesomelicious.com. She’s a fellow Nutritious Life Alum and I’ve had the pleasure to get to know her over the last few years. Last time we were able to see each other in person was in NY a couple of years ago at The Nutritious Life’s Masterclass. We were able to grab dinner together each night and really share about our thoughts about the wellness industry, our businesses, and our families. She’s truly amazing and now you get to have a glimpse inside how she lives a healthy life.

AMY RAINS

What is your occupation?

Nutritionist, food blogger, recipe developer, food photographer, cookbook creator

How did you choose this career?

I have always always LOVED food. Ever since I was a little girl, I was such a foodie. I actually started my career as an Army Intelligence Officer, and after having my first child, decided that I needed to do something more independent and from home. So I went back to school to get my masters in nutrition and once I started working with clients, I wanted to show everyone that eating healthy food is DELICIOUS!!! It doesn’t have to be boring chicken breast with boiled broccoli. You can eat like a king or queen and still maintain a healthy lifestyle. So I started posting my healthy recipes to a website I created, and it took off. I realized I could make a full time income from continuing to create yummy and delicious meals that were designed for busy families.

What do you love about what you do?

I love that my day is revolved around food, ha! I do love to use my creative side to develop new recipes, it’s really fun for me to put something together and have that excitement of getting to share it with others. Also, I love the balance of using my nerd brain to talk about nutrition with others and helping them to feel better.

When you first started living a healthy lifestyle, did you have a mentor or did you find more success doing it on your own?

I was definitely more on my own. As I got more into nutrition counseling, I loved looking to Keri Glassman who was super helpful in building that part of my business!

What pushes you out of your comfort zone?

That’s a tough one. If ever there is something I am uncomfortable with or unsure about if I should push to do it, I usually talk to my husband about it and pray about it. And if I am still feeling led to do it, I know it’s the right decision!

What kind of workout do you do, how many days per week do you workout, and for how long?

I have many! I walk my dog at least 2 miles daily, I do HIIT workouts 4x per week for 30-45 minutes, and I also do yoga 5x per week (some are short 20-30 minutes, some are closer to an hour depending on the day). I am a yoga instructor, so I love it! I am also generally very active. I have been playing golf lately (thanks COVID) a few nights per week and walk all nine holes, play pickleball with my kids, and also coach youth sports which keeps me running around in the evenings. Basically, I walk and workout in the mornings, and do “activities/sports” most nights of the week.

What does a typical day of eating look like for you?

I do intermittent fasting everyday, and normally don’t eat my first meal until closer to noon. It’s definitely still breakfast (Break Fast)! But it means that I only eat 2-3 times per day, don’t need any snacks. Kind of makes things easier for me.

Brunch: 2 eggs with ½ avocado, sauteed veggies (always mix these up). Lately I’ve been loving Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi with eggs, so good!

Snack: If I am eating a later dinner and need something to hold me over from my first meal to dinner, I’ll have a smoothie. Different flavors, but during the summer I love raspberry or blueberry smoothies with collagen. I always add chia seeds for extra fiber.

Dinner: We eat a huge variety here! I eat a salad every night and then whatever I make for the family. Some of my favorites include taco bowls over cauliflower rice, soups, sheet pan dinners, Instant Pot meals (generally Indian, Thai, or mexican) etc.

What inspires you to live a healthy and active life?

My family for sure. I want to be a good role model for my kids, and I honestly LOVE being active so it’s easy for me to do.

How do you stay motivated on a daily basis?

I am pretty self motivated. I am very in touch with how my body feels, so I want to do these things daily. When my mind and energy levels are feeling great, I am happier and a better mom and wife! I know my body feels best when I am active, get great sleep, and enjoy my food.

How do you handle unhealthy cravings?

Honestly, I don’t really have them anymore. When I do, I ask myself what have I done differently lately: has my sleep been off, have I had too much sugar, did I not drink enough water today, and then I work to fix whatever I think is “off”. I’ve been through periods of time when I think my gut is not in the best place (this can cause my hormones to be a little off and cause cravings), so I will work to fix that immediately (more fiber, probiotics, no alcohol or sugar, etc). And I will also satisfy the craving. Which is probably chocolate, and I am fine eating some chocolate!

What would you say is the key to balancing it all?

Time management. Making time for yourself each day and doing what makes you happy and feel good. I love to eat, so I always make sure I carve out enough time to make myself and my family yummy and nutritious meals. I also love to be active, so ensuring I have time for that as well. Finally, I need about 30 minutes of quiet time in the mornings to really set myself up for a productive day, so I am regimented about going to bed early, so I can get up early and have my quiet time. I use this for daily scripture reading too! When these things are in line, I can be productive with my work. Even if I only get in a few good hours of work in a day, they are very focused.

What is your favorite workout apparel?

Definitely Lululemon. Anytime I stray and try other brands, I am usually disappointed. ha!

If you could only pick one exercise or movement to do everyday that would be amazing for your body, what would it be?

Yoga. Gentle on your body, but so much strength training and flexibility.

What advice would you give to people to be their healthiest and best self?

Find out what you love, and be sure to incorporate it into your daily routine! AND.. Make your kitchen an amazing place with all of your favorite foods and appliances.
